Lifestyle Magazine - August's Where do they eat?

Aug. 5, 2009 by John Collingwood

Having had a good old think about what I look for when I choose somewhere to eat, I’ve realised that for me it’s about the total dining experience.

It’s more than simply finding somewhere which serves a top notch plate of food, I want that sensation when all my senses are tickled and I walk out with a big grin on my face. Fortunately in the north east we’re pretty spoiled for choice!

If, like me, you enjoy somewhere to catch up with a mate over a coffee, munching on the most amazing sandwiches and cake, then look no further than Blakes on Grey Street. It’s no surprise that it’s always busy and on a sunny day you can sit outside and enjoy beautiful Grey Street too.

For a cheeky afternoon or post-work pint accompanied by some awesome pub grub then it has to be The Forth. Always a winner, it has a chilled out atmosphere and a menu which re ects that. Excellent fish finger sarnies.

Recently I celebrated my 30th at a hidden gem on the Newcastle Quayside, The Silk Room Champagne Bar and Restauran. The menu is perfectly balanced with classic world dishes, intermixed with unusual surprises. My Dad thought the kangaroo was just perfect.

On my travels teaching you lovely folk how to make great tasting cocktails, I have unearthed some truly mind-blowing places. Edinburgh for me is the perfect blend of outstanding architecture, friendly Scots and unbelievable restaurants and cocktail bars. Top of my list is Tigerlily and Bramble. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

However I must confess my most memorable dining experience was also the most basic. Imagine cooking a dinner for 15 on a camp re, plating up then sitting on the beach to watch a Fijian sunset. Now that is something you would never get bored of.
