Be creative and innovative - Clinton Weir
Here’s the 3rd in my series of interviews. Clinton Weir, an awesome mixologist and flairer, shares his views with us. Clinton is new to the world flair scene, but he is hitting it hard!
When did you first begin practising?
October 1997.
When and where did the flair scene explode for you?
South Africa, 2002, at the first national championships.
How or what inspired you to flair and get to the standard you are at today?
My brother really and his older mates at the time I was still in school.
Who were your role models in flair growing up?
Dave Lombaard, for me, has been the most consistent role model as others have inspired and then lost their respect.
What is flairing about for you?
Entertaining people who want to be entertained and of course putting my energy to good use.
What is the atmosphere like back stage before a comp?
Usually different each time cause it depends on who I’m up against, sometimes fun, sometimes not so fun.
What is routine before you go on?
Try to keep as humble and calm as possible.
Do you have a drink for Dutch courage and clam the nerves?
Sometimes depending on who is there with me.
What goes through your mind when you are on stage flairing?
Its time to shine
How would you describe your style in five words?
Original, fast, technical, intriguing & fun!
Where do you think flair will be in five years time?
Hopefully, over the top
What did you have to do to get to your first Roadhouse finals?
This year: broke a tooth and spent all my cash on a flair room.
What does the Roadhouse comp mean to you?
Everything for me as I was not able to travel in 2008. But it is the biggest running & most respected annual comp in the world.
What would it feel like to become number 1?
A lot of practice finally getting justice, and of course being No.1 is the greatest you could feel.
What piece of advice would you give to a budding flairer?
Don’t be lazy and don’t use other people’s moves.
