Jack Cain's 'Bitter & Twisted' Cocktail Competition

Jan. 27, 2010 by John Collingwood

Bitter and Twisted

What’s it all about?

Every year in March there is a Science Festival organised by those friendly people at the Centre for Life. Last year they held a ‘Botany of Gin’ evening where people learned lots about gin and tasted a few too. This year things have moved on.

Did you know humans have a way of tasting salt, two ways of tasting sweet and umami and three ways of tasting sour, but at least 28 different bitter taste receptors.

So this year Jack Cain’s Gins have teamed up with Noel Jackson from the Centre for Life to host an evening on 15 March to explore our most sophisticated tastes with a series of exciting cocktails yet to be invented.

How do I enter the competition?

We want to find the best ‘Bitter and Twisted’ Cocktails using any of the three Jack Cain’s Gins, premium, sloe and damson.

The winning cocktails will be used in the Bitter and Twisted event on 15th March as part of the Science Festival.

There is a masterclass being held next Tuesday 2nd February at 3 pm in Popolo to help you get some ideas for the competition and taste the gins etc. Andy from Jack Cain’s, Noel from the Centre for Life and Matt from Popolo will be there.

The actual competition night will be in Popolo on 25th February and we are looking for a maximum of ten competitors on the night.

If you are interested in the competition come along to Popolo next Tuesday or contact Andy at Jack Cain’s Gin (07746 086 924 or andy@jackcains.co.uk) or Matt at Popolo (info@popolo.co.uk).

Competitions mean prizes

Main prize is a 2 night DFDS Seaways Mini Cruise to Amsterdam for 2 people kindly donated by DFDS Seaways. Sailing from North Shields with DFDS Seaways.

On this Mini Cruise you will enjoy 2 nights on board ship in an en suite sea-view cabin, coach transfers to Amsterdam city centre and the best part of the day to explore this cultural and beautiful capital city as well as the birthplace of gin!

You’ll also receive two Holland Passes which provide 5 free admissions to many attractions and museums in Amsterdam, including House of Bols Cocktail & Genever Experience, an adventure into the world of cocktails.

Thanks
